SHARON BUHR, MPH, Creator of the SUGAR, SALT & FAT Test Tube Visuals

Sharon Buhr, upon returning from four years of mission work in nutrition in South Africa, returned to the USA and completed a second major in nutrition and a master’s of public health from the University of Minnesota.  She then created a position in public health at the hospital and clinic where she was hired.  Recognizing that heart disease was rampant in America, that nutrition and exercise are key to prevention, and that healthy eating must begin in childhood, she created the SUGAR, SALT & FAT Test Tube Visuals to give a visual impact to students.

Through numerous grants, Buhr initially shared the Test Tube Visuals along with a Healthy Heart Curriculum (Young People’s Healthy Heart Program) with North Dakota Schools.  Meanwhile, her clinic patients often commented how ‘seeing’ these visuals made a bigger impact on them related to what to eat than all the verbal counseling that Buhr had done.  At that point she decided to nationally market both the SUGAR, SALT & FAT Test Tube Visuals and the Healthy Heart Curriculum.
